Summary of current situation

There are a total of 2,156 political prisoners in Burma.

Since the protests in August 2007 leading to last September’s Saffron Revolution, a total of 1,081 activists have been arrested and are still in detention. During the month of April 2009, at least 15 activists were arrested, 7 sentenced and 16 were transferred to prisons away from Rangoon. 8 activists were released. 13 political prisoners are reported to be in bad health this month. 88 Generation Students leader Min Ko Naing has been awarded the Gwangju Human Rights Prize by a South Korean foundation.
