Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 18 January 2024

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (4,385) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (750) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,837) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,936) are currently in detention, (8,512) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (119) post-coup death row prisoners as of 18 January 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (162) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,901) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from February 2021 to January 18, 2024, (59) women and (174) men; (233) people in total, who worked as civil servants, except medical, educational staff and engineers, were arrested by the junta across the country, with Mandalay Region recording the highest number of arrests of (67) people. Among (233) arrests, (170) people are still under detention.

On January 12, 2024, Pe Win Tun, a railway employee from Hinthada Town in Ayeyarwady Region, who was serving in the Department of Electricity at the Insein Station in Yangon Region, was arrested by police force subservient to the junta on the accusation of supporting the PDFs and was charged under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. He joined the CDM for six months after the coup but he was transferred as an employee of the Electricity Department from Hinthada Station to Insein Station.
