Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,017) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (24,532) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,970) are currently in detention, (7,208) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (102) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 30, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (145) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,562) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, between January and August 30, 2023, (612) people have been killed by the junta in Sagaing Region. The number of people killed in detention amounts to  (230) victims, resulting in the highest proportion of junta-related deaths in the region. In addition, during the stated period, (352) people have been arrested by the junta and (695) people have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta in Sagaing Region.

On August 26, approximately 100 junta personnel raided Kyee Kan (North) Village in Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region and arrested 3 women and 3 men; 6 individuals  in total, which included 4 family members who were seeking refuge at the monastery at the time. The junta forces abducted and transported them to a building beside the Shwebo-Mandalay Road for investigation. Two of the women were imprisoned in the building. One of the women, and three men were taken by the junta, and Shwe Mahn Thu was reportedly raped and her throat was slit. Her father, Tin Hsann along with Han Swe and Naing Linn, the latter of whom had mental health concerns and had been from Kyee Kan (South) Village, had their throats slit by the junta as well. A Royal-D (400 ml soft drink) bottle was found inserted in Shwe Mahn Thu’s genitalia. On August 27, their bodies were found in a mango plantation situated between Kyee Kan (North) Village and Hla Taw Village.
