Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (4,007) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (24,462) people were arrested and among them, (19,943) are currently under detention, (7,199) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 25, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (144) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,519) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, between January and August 25, 2023, (4) women and (15) men; (19) people in total, have been sentenced to death penalty under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta across the country, with Yangon Region recording the highest sentences with (13) people.

On August 18, Indaw Township Military Tribunal sentenced Zaw Myo Tun (aka To Ni), Myint Myint Aye (aka Aye Aye), Kyaw Swar Win (aka Kyaw Swar) and Aung Kyaw Kyaw Moe (aka Lar Lar) to death under Section 49(a) and 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. In April 2023, junta forces arrested Zaw Myo Tun (aka To Ni) at a checkpoint located near the entrance to Indaw Town, and in June 2023, they arrested Myint Myint Aye (aka Aye Aye), Kyaw Swar Win (aka Kyaw Swar) and Aung Kyaw Kyaw Moe (aka Lar Lar) in Indaw Town. They were all arrested for allegedly providing weapons and rations to the PDF in Indaw Township, Sagaing Region.
