Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,688) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,410) people were arrested and among them, (19,066) are currently under detention, (6,474) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of June 22, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,344) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from February 2021 to June 22, 2023, (40) Hluttaw Representatives who served as prime ministers, ministers and deputy ministers during the NLD’s term as the governing authority, along with those who had won the election in 2020, were arrested by the junta. Among the (40), (31) have been still detained, including (27) representatives who had been sentenced to serve in prisons under specious charges.

The junta forces arrested Tun Tun Oo in Paungde Town, Bago Region on May 30, and on June 21, Paungde Prison Special Court sentenced him to serve a total of 6 years in prison on two charges under Section 505 A of the Penal Code. He had previously served as the Minister of Immigration and Population for Bago Region during the NLD’s government.
