Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,685) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,399) people were arrested and among them, (19,056) are currently under detention, (6,464) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of June 21, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,343) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from February 2021 to June 21, 2023, the junta killed (3) women and (88) men; (91) people in total across the country. All deaths occurred in detention, and they were interrogated as well. Mandalay Region contains the highest number of deaths, with (20). (45) people died from February to December in 2021. (32) people died in 2022 and (14) people died from January to June 21 in 2023.

On April 27, after a police station in Nyaung Khar Shey Village, Waw Township in Bago Region was attacked, junta personnel apprehended over 30 locals from nearby villages. Among the captives were Mya Thein and Kyaw Myint Thein from Kyon Par Village, Tin Myo Khaing, Win Zaw Htay and Hsan Shay from Hpoe Sa Bai Village; all of whom were killed during interrogation.
