Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,679) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,386) people were arrested and among them, (19,044) are currently under detention, (6,457) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of June 20, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,342) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, between February 2021 and June 20, 2023, the junta arrested (357) people as hostages across the country, with Mandalay Region reporting the highest number of hostages, with (65) people, followed by Yangon Region with (60) people.

On June 19, at approximately 12 p.m., around 30 junta personnel physically assaulted and took Aung Phe as a hostage from his house located in Pyin Htein Village in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region. He was the father of Min Lwin Oo, who is a member of Dawei District Strike Committee in Tanintharyi Region. He is currently detained at Launglon Myoma Police Station. Min Lwin Oo served as a president of Dawei Technological University Students’ Union and a warrant was issued for his arrest under Section 505 A of the Penal Code in March 2021.
