Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,663) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,361) people were arrested and among them, (19,021) are currently under detention, (6,422) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of June 16, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,341) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by AAPP, since January 2023 and up until June 16, 2023, (753) people have died across the country due to the junta’s repressive and violent actions. Sagaing Region has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with a total of (443) killed by the junta. Among the (753) victims, (40) people were taken as hostages before being killed, while (35) people were captured and used as human shields before getting killed.

From May 28 to June 3, junta forces attacked the villages of Inn Yar, Nyaung Kone, Hpet Hkar Kone, In Pin Hla, Chat Kone, Bant Bway Kone, Mote Wa and Sa Pee Kyauk Tan in Kawlin Township, Sagaing Region. Then, on May 29, the junta forces arrested four civilians, three members of the People’s Administration Team and two personnel from the People’s Defence Team and used them as human shields. On June 5, nine bodies were discovered near Thit Hpu Hla Hpa Yar Kone in Kyauk Tan Village.
