Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,427) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.
Since the coup, a total of (21,474) people were arrested and among them (17,570) are currently under detention, (5,647) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (110) post-coup death row prisoners as of April 21, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (152) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,882) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to information gathered today, on April 19, the Union Supreme Court agreed to hear the appeals made by State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi regarding some of the charges she is facing. The appeals concern charges under Penal Code Section 130(a) for election fraud and the Myanmar Official Secrets Act Section 3(1)(c), as well as five counts of corruption involving the purchase and rental of a rescue helicopter.
In addition, on the morning of April 19, a coalition of junta forces and Pyu Saw Htee militia members, totaling around 100 personnel, raided Mya Kan Village in Khin-U Township, Sagaing Region. During the raid, the personnel fired heavy weaponry and clashed with the People’s Defence Forces. While the PDF members were retreating, the junta forces captured and killed five PDF members: Tayote Gyi, Moe Hein, Phoe Kyaw, Naung, and Kyaw Naing. Their bodies were discovered with gunshot wounds and their eyes gouged out. Moreover, while leaving the village, the junta forces took five local men as hostages.
