Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,171) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (17,040) people are currently under detention, (5,241) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (108) post-coup death row prisoners as of March 28, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (150) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,844) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on March 24, at around 11 a.m., the No. 8 Infantry Battalion shot villagers Saw Nga Pyuu and Saw Ye Naing Win dead, while the Battalion was on hidden watch near Daukyat Village in Bilin Township, Mon State. The Battalion shot the two villagers for no apparent reason while they were walking. The villagers died on the spot.

In addition, on January 24, 2023, the junta arrested Lal Pang Sann Ngar for encouraging people to join the Civil Disobedience Movement and participating in protests himself after the coup. On February 24, he was sentenced to serve two years in prison under Section 505 A of the Penal Code. Then, the junta informed his family members that he died suddenly while being detained at Mawlaikkalay Prison on March 21. His family retrieved his body and buried him in Myar Zaw Village in Falam Township, Chin State, where he had resided before his death.
