Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,142) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (16,574) people are currently under detention, (5,099) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of March 17, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (145) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,842) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on September 28, 2022, junta forces arrested Thit Sann Oo (aka Thar Ael Ngal) from No. 11 Ward in Tamu Town, Sagaing Region, for allegedly writing posts against the junta on social media. On January 9, 2023, he was sentenced to serve four years in prison under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. On March 16, at around 9 p.m., while being detained in a cell at Tamu Myoma Police Station, he felt dizzy. He died while being transported from the police station to the hospital.

In addition, on March 14, junta forces launched an offensive on Myaung Township in Sagaing Region. Two internally displaced locals ran into the military column; they were arrested, tortured, and shot dead. The two locals were 70-year-old Thant from Min Tan Village and a man from Thar Dun Village.
