Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,018) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (15,911) people are currently under detention, (4,429) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of February 20, 2023. (120) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (41) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (144) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,833) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on February 15, junta forces indiscriminately fired heavy weaponry at villages after an intense clash between the Yedashe PDF and the junta’s Light Infantry Battalion 84 near Doe Tan Village Tract in Yedashe Township, Bago Region. As a result, Kyi Lwin from Doe Tan Village and Ei Ei Phyo, age three, from Aye Thar Yar Kone Village died on the spot in an artillery shell explosion. Moreover, Ei Ei Phyo’s mother Nweat Nweat Soe sustained injuries in the attack, and she died on February 18 while receiving treatment at Yedashe People’s Hospital.

In addition, on February 17, 120 personnel, including junta forces from Light Infantry Battalion 368 and Pyu Saw Htee members, were launching an offensive from Inn Lel Gyi Village in Kanbalu Township, Sagaing Region. At 10:30 a.m., Wine Chit and Zaw Myo Linn, members of the Kanbalu Underground Warriors (KUW), encountered these junta personnel near their KUW base. The junta personnel burned them alive on a tractor.
