Today Annoucement could not be Helpful for Peace and Stability

April 17, 2026

AAPP welcomes the reunion of the elected and legitimate President U Win Myint with his loved ones on Myanmar New Year, as well as the reuniting of other political prisoners with their families, including NLD MP Dr. Tin Min Htut and filmmaker Shin Daewe.

However, do not forget that the military are still committing war crimes and crimes against humanity. During the water festival they continued in their airstrike campaign, as well as burning down villages and killing innocent people. This amnesty is an attempt to cover up those crimes.

The first step to peace and stability is the unconditional release of all political prisoners including State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Those elected in 2020 must be placed in their elected positions. Without such, this release is unlikely to contribute meaningfully to a democratic transition.

These releases may be conditional which will ensure that the broader impact remains limited. Political prisoners are likely to face considerable challenges following their release.

In practical terms, immediate obstacles such as the cost and logistics of traveling long distances to return home complicates the release of some released individuals. Many may encounter difficulties returning to their homes, particularly those from conflict-affected areas.

The conscription law also adds an additional layer of uncertainty and fear for young people who have been released.

“To overcome these challenges, all revolutionary forces must unite and continue moving toward our goal.”
