Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (7,974) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

A total of (30,875) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (14,247) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,884) remain to be verified.

These are the numbers verified by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

On April 17, 2026 (the first day of the Burmese New Year), the junta announced the release of (4,335) male and female prisoners from various prisons, jails, and police stations across the country. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) has been monitoring the release of political prisoners included in this list. According to information collected as of 4 p.m. today, around (143) political prisoners from (17) prisons have been confirmed as released, in total. (105) of them have been identified.

The junta has been continuously carrying out targeted attacks on civilians and buildings considered non-military targets during the Burmese New Year period. At least (20) civilians have lost their lives during the Thingyan festival period, according to ground reports. On April 13, an aerial bombing was carried out on a monastery in Seik Khun Village, Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, killing two monks who had temporarily entered the order and one novice. Many other monks were injured. On April 14, the junta conducted an aerial bombing using paraglider bombs on Yin Baung Taing Village, Salingyi Township, Sagaing Region, killing one man. On April 16, the junta conducted an aerial bombing on Kyauk Kar Village, Monywa Township, Sagaing Region, killing three civilians.
