⁨⁨Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Date – 12 October 2026

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (8,528) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

A total of (32,146) people have been arrested by the junta for opposing their arbitrary seizure of power. Of those arrested, (15,040) are confirmed to still be in detention, while (7,732) remain to be verified.

These are the numbers reported by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

The junta has been deliberately subjecting political prisoners, detained in prisons across the country, to physical and mental abuse and torture. This is highlighted by the fact that so far, (8) political prisoners died in 2026 due to a lack of timely or adequate medical treatment.

Furthermore, junta forces have been deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs), neither of which constitutes a military target. During the first week of October, an aerial bombing on Aung Hpyu Pyin village (where IDPs were staying) and “Byar La” and “Pann Nilar” IDP camps in Ponnagyun Township, Rakhine State, resulted in the deaths of approximately eight IDPs and injured at least twenty others. Similarly, on October 11, an aerial bombing on Mahasi Monastery in Seik Khun Village, Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, reportedly killed two IDPs who were sheltering there and injured many others. Additionally, religious buildings including the Dhammarum (community hall for religious purposes) and the meditation center sustained damage from the attack.
