Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,198) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,446) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,717) are currently in detention, (8,155) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (120) post-coup death row prisoners as of November 23, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (163) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,729) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January to November 23, 2023, (11) women and (26) men; (37) people in total from the education sector including teachers, students and employees have been killed by the junta across the country with Chin State recording the highest number of deaths with (12) victims.

In addition, during the stated period, (47) women and (28) men; (75) people in total from the education sector have been arrested by the junta and (73) people are still under detention across the country. Among (75) arrests, Mandalay Region records the highest number of arrests with (26) individuals.

Moreover, during this period, (22) women and (35) men; (57) in total from the education sector, have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta and are still detained in prisons across the country. Yangon Region records the highest number of sentences with (19) people.
