Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Updated 30 October 2023

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,161) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,359) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,636) are currently in detention, (7,930) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (120) post-coup death row prisoners as of October 30, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (163) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,723) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, following the unjust coup, the junta has been arresting, torturing, and imprisoning civilians who protest against them on specious charges. Although the ban on prison visits by the families of the prisoners, which had been imposed before the coup citing COVID-19 protocols, was lifted last week on October 24, certain restrictions remain in place. However, imprisoned Government Ministers, Hluttaw Representatives, some political party members, and political prisoners serving long prison sentences are still b‌anned from receiving prison visits.

In addition, once civilians are detained, they are subjected to torture within police stations, during interrogations, and in prisons, without being able to receive the rights typically granted to political prisoners. Tragically, deaths have occurred due to torture in prisons and interrogation centers. Additionally, deaths have resulted from both physical and sexual torture, inadequate medical care in prison clinics, and a lack of timely emergency treatment.

According to data collected by AAPP, from February 1, 2021 to October 30, 2023, (1,501) people have been killed in various ways after being detained by the junta across the country. Among the (1,501), (25) of them were killed at the police stations, (114) of them were killed at the interrogations and (68) of them were killed at the prisons after being detained by the junta.

In March 2023, junta forces apprehended Kyaw Thein during an offensive operation into Hin Cho Taw Village in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region. He  was subsequently sentenced to serve 13 years in Dawei Prison under Sections 50 (j), 51 and 52 of the Counter-Terrorism Law. On October 27, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m., he passed away while being transported from the prison clinic to an external hospital due to shortness of breath. His body was placed in the Dawei Hospital mortuary and was then cremated on October 28, 2023.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses.
