Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,159) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,349) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,628) are currently in detention, (7,901) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (120) post-coup death row prisoners as of October 26, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (163) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,721) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the AAPP, from January to October 26, 2023, (267) women, (1,223) men and (2) transgender people; (1,492) people in total, were given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta and still detained in prisons across the country with Sagaing Region recording the highest number of sentences with (909) people. Among (1,492) sentences, (108) people have been given life imprisonment, (31) people have been given death penalty and (7) people have been given both life imprisonment and death penalty.

On October 20, Indaw Township Military Tribunal sentenced CDM middle school teacher Hein Min Thu (aka Arr Noe) and Zaw Myint Tun to serve life imprisonment under Sections 50 (j), 52 (a) and 52 (b) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. On the same day, the Indaw Township Military Tribunal sentenced Jone Jone Kyaw Zin to serve 7 years imprisonment with hard labor under Sections 52 (a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law for allegedly teaching for the NUG and having connection with the PDFs. All three of the sentenced political prisoners were from Indaw Town in Sagaing Region.
