Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,155) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,337) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,616) are currently in detention, (7,826) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (120) post-coup death row prisoners as of October 24, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (163) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,721) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from October 1 to 24, 2023, (10) women and (45) men; (55) people in total, have been killed by the junta across the country. On October 19, at approximately 8:30 a.mjunta forces clashed with PDF near Kyet Tu Yway and Thae Inn Villages, on the edge of Singu Township and Madaya Township, in Mandalay Region. Then, in the evening of the same day, around 80 junta personnel raided Shin Hla (North) Village, in Madaya Township, and captured a local identified as Zaya, who was unable to flee due to having a stroke. He was then killed by having his throat slit.

In addition, during the stated period, (10) women and (30) men; (40) people in total, have been arrested by the junta across the country. On October 16, Kyaw Soe Htwe, a strike leader from Kale Town, Sagaing Region, was released from Kale Prison after serving his sentence. But on October 19, junta forces rearrested him and took him to a Regional Operations Command. He has been missing ever since. Initially, the junta forces arrested him on April 26, 2022, for his alleged participation in anti-junta protests and sentenced him to serve 2 years in prison under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code.
