Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,154) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,331) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,610) are currently in detention, (7,821) of whom are serving sentences.

It is verified today that (7) detainees in prisons have been sentenced to death on October 20, 2023. There are a total of (120) post-coup death row prisoners as of October 23, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (163) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,721) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, the junta wantonly celebrated the 8th Anniversary of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) last week at Nay Pyi Taw. On the other hand, it is escalating its atrocities across the country targeting civilians.

In the previous week, junta forces launched offensive operations, including arson, abductions and killings, in various locations across the country. In Magway Region, these attacks targeted Kyee Kan, Taung-O, Kan Beit and Pauk Ku Villages in Yesagyo Township, and Wet Poke and Nyaung Yin Villages in Pauk Township. In Sagaing Region, these attacks targeted Hman Thar and Wa Bar Villages in Tabayin Township, Nat Kone (South) Village in Wetlet Township, Kyaw Zayar Village in Sagaing Township, villages in northern Kanbalu Township, Set Kant Village in Kale Township, and Nyaung Tan and Pauk Pan Phyu Villages in Yinmarbin Township. In Mandalay Region, these attacks struck Shin Hla Myauk and Htan Chauk Pin Villages in Madaya Township, and Thea Inn, Kyet Tu Yway and Hin Thar Ma Villages in Singu Township. Finally, in Tanintharyi Region the junta assaulted villages in Yebyu and Thayetchaung Townships 

In the morning of October 19, around 100 junta personnel launched an attack on Pauk Ku and Kan Beit Villages in Yesagyo Township, Magway Region. During the attack, they set fire to houses and captured two locals called Han Tin and Soe Naing Oo who encountered the military column. Following the capture, they were tortured and killed by junta forces.
