Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,150) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,312) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,593) are currently in detention, (7,787) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (113) post-coup death row prisoners as of October 18, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (156) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,719) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from February 2021 to October 18, 2023, (70) women and (284) men; (354) people in total from Tanintharyi Region have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta and still detained in prisons. Among (354), (7) people have been given 30 years and over 30 years imprisonment and (2) people have been given life imprisonment.

Yin Yin Cho was arrested by junta forces at her house in Anauk Ward in Dawei Town, Tanintharyi Region on January 2, 2023, for allegedly supporting PDF members. She had been sentenced to serve 12 years in prison under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law by Dawei District Court in May. Then, in the second week of October, the court sentenced her to serve an additional imprisonment of 32 years in prison: 10 years under Section 50 (j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law; 10 years under Sections 51 and 52 of the Counter-Terrorism Law and 12 years under Section 54 of the Counter-Terrorism Law, making it 44 years of imprisonment in total.
