Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,148) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.
Since the coup, a total of (25,305) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,649) are currently in detention, (7,767) of whom are serving sentences.
There are a total of (113) post-coup death row prisoners as of October 16, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (156) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,656) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, since the coup, junta forces have been firing various weaponry at civilian areas across the country and launching attacks into them. They also have set fire to schools, hospitals, religious buildings and civilians’ houses.
In the recent two weeks, junta forces have continued their arson attacks while launching offensive operations into various locations across the country, including Lon Gyone Yan Village, in Bhamo Township, Kachin State, Ohn Taw Taung Su Village in Pauk Township, and Kywe Kone, Kyun Nyo and Nan U Kyun Kale Villages in Yesagyo Township, located in Magway Region, Sek Kant and Shar Taw Villages in Kale Township, Gaung Khwe, Wet Kya and Hnaw Pin Villages in Myaung Township and Pay Gyi Village in Kanbalu Township, located in Sagaing Region, Pu Zun Myaung Village, in Nyaunglebin Township, Bago Region, Palaw, Thayetchaung, Dawei and Yebyu Townships in Tanintharyi Region. As a result, approximately 220 houses were burned down, forcing the locals to flee for safety.
In addition, on October 7, around 100 junta personnel launched attacks on Sek Kant Village, in Kale Township, Sagaing Region, leading to the locals having to flee for safety. During the attack, an elderly woman and her grandson, Nu Ngaih Hnem and Salai Van Bawi Lian, who were unable to flee, were shot and killed by junta forces. Their bodies were subsequently burned.
