Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,100) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (450) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (24,832) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,260) are currently in detention, (7,364) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (107) post-coup death row prisoners as of September 22, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (150) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,572) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from September 1 to 22, 2023, (2) women and (26) men; (28) people in total, have been killed by the junta in Sagaing Region. Among the (28) deceased, (15) people were killed by the junta’s shots making the highest number of deaths.

In addition, during the stated period, (7) men have been arrested by the junta and (12) women and (53) men; (65) people in total, have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta in Sagaing Region.

On September 17, junta naval vessels traveling to Bhamo Town, in Kachin State, came under attack near Tote Gyi Village in Katha Township, Sagaing Region. Subsequently, junta forces conducted raids in the village and set fire to 45 houses. During the raid, they killed seven men. Among the victims, four were identified as Ye Maung and Nyan Tun (aka Kite Kite), from Than Pa Yar Kone Village, Aung Linn and Khin Maung Htay, from Tote Gyi Village. Bodies of four deceased people were discovered in Tote Gyi Village. Ye Maung and Nyan Tun (aka Kite Kite) were shot dead, while Aung Linn and Khin Maung Htay were set fire alive. As of this writing, the whereabouts of the remaining victims, identified as Chae, Bo Bo Tun and Aung Than, from Tote Gyi Village, remain unknown.
