Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,047) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (24,717) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,424) are currently in detention, (7,262) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of September 6, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (146) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,293) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from January to September 6, 2023, (214) women, (937) men and and (2) transgender people; (1,153) people in total have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta across the country. Sagaing Region records the highest number of sentences with (716) people. Out of the (1,153), (91) people have been sentenced to life imprisonment, (14) people have been sentenced to the death penalty and (7) people have been sentenced to both life imprisonment and death penalty.

On September 2, Indaw Township Military Tribunal sentenced Zaw Myo Naing, Tin Maung Win, Thidar Win and Kyaw Thet who were arrested in Indaw Town, Sagaing Region in July, 2023, to life imprisonment and long-term prison sentences. Zaw Myo Naing was sentenced to life imprisonment under Sections 50(j) and 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law and Tin Maung Win was sentenced to life imprisonment under Sections 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law and 124(c) of the Penal Code. Thidar Win and Kyaw Thet were each sentenced to 7 years in prison under Sections 52(a) and 52(b) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
