Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,043) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution.

Since the coup, a total of (24,694) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,857) are currently in detention, (7,302) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of September 5, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (146) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,837) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from January to September 5, 2023, (453) women, (1,214) men and (1) transgender people; (1,668) people in total have been arrested by the junta across the country. Sagaing Region records the highest number of arrests with (357) people.

On August 28, around 100 junta personnel raided Hla Taw Village in Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region. On the early morning of August 30, junta forces took 5 locals identified as Chit Oo, Phoe Ni Toe, Phoe Aung, Zaw Min Htet and Nga Net from Hla Taw Village as hostages to Yae Htwet Village and also took 1 local identified as Maung Thant from Yae Htwet Village. It is currently unknown where they have been taken.
