Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (4,009) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (24,469) people were arrested and among them, (19,950) are currently under detention, (7,198) of whom are serving sentences. 

There are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 28, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (144) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,519) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, in recent weeks, junta forces have carried out airstrikes in civilian populated areas across the country, even in the absence of clashes. There have been extensive injuries and damages recorded as a result. On August 23, junta forces from No.14 Advanced Military Training School based in Hpruso Town, deployed drones and targeted a village in eastern Hpruso Township, Kayah State with explosives. No clashes had been recorded there. 3 children were injured and a house was destroyed.

Additionally, junta forces fired heavy artillery at civilian areas and subsequently raided them, resulting in people evacuating for their safety. On August 25, a military column of approximately 200 junta personnel from LIB-361, 701, 702 and 708 conducted artillery strikes at several villages in Khin-U Township, Sagaing Region and raided them. Over 6,000 locals from Pin Din, Kyar Pin Aing, Nyaung Pin Gyi Su, Thein Taw and nearby villages had to flee to their safety.

According to data collected by AAPP, between January and August 28, 2023, (4) women and (9) men; (13) people in total, have been killed by the junta in Yangon Region. Additionally, (60) women and (183) men; (243) people in total, have been arrested by the junta and (26) women and (104) men; (130) people in total, have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta in Yangon Region during the stated period.
