Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (4,000) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (24,410) people were arrested and among them, (19,895) are currently under detention, (7,175) of whom are serving sentences. 

AAPP verified today that (3) detainees were sentenced to death under suspicious charges on August 18, 2023. Thus, there are a total of (101) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 23, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (144) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,515) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, between January and August 23, 2023, (30) women and (65) men; (95) people in total, have been killed by the junta in Bago Region. Additionally, (34) women and (123) men; (157) people in total, have been arrested by the junta and (4) women and (27) men; (31) people in total, have been given prison sentences under specious charges by courts subservient to the junta in Bago Region during the stated period.

On August 18, junta forces employed 4 airstrikes in villages across Kyaukkyi Township, Bago Region. Artillery shells exploded in Khaw Lo Kalo Village. 75-year-old Naw Phaw Law was struck and killed by artillery shrapnel.
