Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,938) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.
Since the coup, a total of (24,301) people were arrested and among them, (19,792) are currently under detention, (7,054) of whom are serving sentences.
Today, AAPP has been able to verify that on August 1, 2023, the sentences of (9) detainees were commuted from death penalty to life imprisonment. Therefore, a total of (19) people were confirmed to have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Among the (19), (2) of them have been sentenced to death today, under additional charges.
There are a total of (98) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 16, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (141) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,509) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by AAPP, between January and August 16, 2023, (369) people were killed in detainment across the country. Sagaing Region recorded the highest fatalities, with (208) victims.
On the evening of August 12, a junta column arrested and killed a mother and a son who were returning on their motorbike from a clinic located in Tar Han Ward, Kale Town, Sagaing Region, near Set Kan Village. Upon killing them, the junta burnt their bodies. They were from Kyun Chaung Village in Kale Township, Sagaing Region.
