Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,861) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (24,130) people were arrested and among them, (19,716) are currently under detention, (6,971) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of August 1, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (158) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,414) people have already been released. 

On the Full Moon of Second Waso, the junta announced, under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the release of (7,749) prisoners across the country.

As of 5 p.m., Yangon time, AAPP has collected and confirmed the release of around (100) political prisoners, but only (20) of these have been identified. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from January to July 2023, (14) men and (34) women; (48) individuals in total have been arrested by the junta from the education sector (including teachers) across the country. Among the (48) arrested, Mandalay Region records the highest number of arrests, with (19) individuals.

On July 27, junta forces arrested Kyaw Min Htay, the father of 2 students studying at Bright Future Federal School. He was arrested along with CDM teachers Wai Yan Min Htike and Myint Myint Than. BFFS is a school operated by the NUG, and the two CDM teachers had been appointed at the school.
