Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,845) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.
Since the coup, a total of (24,005) people were arrested and among them, (19,618) are currently under detention, (6,931) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of July 25, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (158) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,387) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to data collected by AAPP, from February 2021 to July 25, 2023, courts across the country subservient to the junta have sentenced (6,931) in total to serve prison time under specious charges. Among them, there are (26) women, (219) men and (1) LGBT person, a total of (246) people, who have been sentenced to serve more than one prison sentence. Yangon Region holds the highest number of sentences with (90) people. Among the (246) people, there are (3) female students and (16) male students, a total of (19) students.
On July 10, Eastern Yangon District Court gave additional sentences to students from East Yangon University. Aye Min Htike, Phyo Kaung Htike, Hein Htet Zaw, Thiha Aung, and Kaung Khant Naing, already sentenced to long terms in Insein Prison. The students were given an additional 10 years of prison time each under Section 50(i) and 54 of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Kaung Khant Naing was in-charge of the strike committee of East Yangon University Students’ Union.
