According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, in recent weeks, the junta has increasingly carried out airstrikes targeting civilian areas that are considered as non-military targets. These strikes have occurred irrespective of the lack of clashes across the country, resulting in widespread destruction.
On the morning of July 10, junta forces deployed two fighter planes equipped with bombs and attacked Yaemyet Village, Ye-U Township in Sagaing Region, although no clashes were recorded. This resulted in the destruction of an ancient pagoda, some stupas, a monastery and a school in the village.
Moreover, junta forces fired heavily onto civilian areas with various weapons even at the lack of clashes occurring. As a result, the locals were forced to evacuate for their safety.
On the evening of July 15, a military column consisting of over 100 Pyu Saw Htee militiamen from Khun Thaung Gyi Village, Shwebo Township, and junta personnel from Nyaung Pin Thar Agricultural Institute attacked Te Bo Pin Village in Khin-U Township, Sagaing Region. The column fired heavily, targeting Thein Taw Village on the morning of July 16, and subsequently raided it. This resulted in the evacuation of over 8,000 locals from 12 villages, including Te Bo Pin, Thein Taw, Kyun Lel, Kyun Swel, Shwe Yamin, Kan Gyi Kone and Myo Thit Villages.
According to data collected by AAPP, from February 2021 to July 17, 2023, (325) people in Yangon Region were killed by the junta. Of the (325) victims, (112) of them were killed by gunshot, while a further (174) of them were killed in other ways during protest crackdowns. Moreover, (5,458) people were arrested in Yangon Region, and (4,243) are still in detainment. Among the still detained persons, (1,163) were given prison sentences under specious charges.
