Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Updated 12 July 2023

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,785) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,802) people were arrested and among them, (19,427) are currently under detention, (6,802) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of July 12, 2023. (122) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (158) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,375) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from February 2021 to July 12, 2023, (1,302) people were killed in detainment by the junta across the country. Sagaing Region records the highest number of deaths with (717) people. Of the (1,302) victims, (101) of them were killed during interrogation, while (57) of them were killed in prisons.

On June 27, 2023, dozens of prisoners including Khant Linn Naing, Aung Myo Thu, Pyae Phyo Hein and Min Bhone Mahar, were removed from Daik-U Prison.

Since then, their whereabouts are unknown, without any trace of information available on their location. In the first week of July 2023, Daik-U Prison sent signed letters to the family of Khant Linn Naing (aka Ko Khant, aka Let Wae), the family of Pyae Phyo Hein (aka Aung Pyae) and the family of Aung Myo Thu, to inform them of their deaths. In the second week of July, the prison sent another two signed letters to the family of Zin Myint Tun (aka Yar Lay) and the family of Pyae Phyo Aung (aka Harnit), to inform them of their deaths.

According to the letters received, while transferring prisoners from Daik-U Prison to another prison, a transport vehicle was involved in an accident. According to the letters sent with the signature of the Prison Staff Officer, the prisoners allegedly seized the opportunity and attempted to escape, and were subsequently killed by junta forces who fired “warning shots” at them in an attempt to recapture.

AAPP will continue to inform on verified daily arrests, charges, sentences, and fatalities in relation to the attempted coup, and update the lists with details of these alleged offenses.
