Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,770) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,784) people were arrested and among them, (19,413) are currently under detention, (6,705) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of July 10, 2023. (122) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (158) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,371) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, in recent weeks, the junta have increasingly launched airstrikes in civilian areas without any clashes taking place across the country. As a result of the indiscriminate attacks, many civilians have been injured. On July 4, at around 2 am, junta forces aerial bombed an IDP camp using a fighter plane in western Demoso Township, Kayah State, without any clashes taking place – 3 family members, including a 2-year-old child, were injured. A classroom for the internally displaced people and some tents were also destroyed.

Moreover, junta forces are increasingly committing arson in civilian areas. The junta forces attacked and set fire to Bo Kone and Chaung Wa Villages on July 4, and Tha Pyay Hla Village on July 5, in Shwegu Township, Kachin State, without any clashes taking place – over 100 houses were burned down and more than 2,000 locals were forced to flee for safety.

According to data collected by AAPP, from February 2021 to July 10, 2023, (110) people in Chin State were killed by the junta. On July 8, at around 11 am, junta forces aerial bombed Wone Khon Village in M’ghinghlaw Village Tract in Mindat Township, Chin State, using a fighter plane, and IB-274 from Mindat Town fired artillery shells at the village without any clashes taking place. As a result, 3 women, including a 9-year-old girl and a breastfeeding mother, were killed and another man was seriously injured.
