Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,745) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,674) people were arrested and among them, (19,311) are currently under detention, (6,645) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of July 4, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,363) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from February 2021 to July 4, 2023, a total of (138) students; (31) female and (107) male, were imprisoned under specious charges by the courts subservient to the junta, across the country. Of the (138) students, Yangon Region records the highest number of students with (65). 

On June 30, Eastern Yangon District Court sentenced Htet Paing Soe to serve 10 years in prison with hard labor under Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. He is a third year student at the Department of Statistics in Yangon University of Economics (Ywar Thar Gyi) and a vice chairman of the university’s Students’ Union. The junta forces arrested him in Thingangyun Township, Yangon Region, on April 21, 2022.
