Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,728) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,644) people were arrested and among them, (19,288) are currently under detention, (6,612) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of June 29, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,356) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from February 2021 to June 29, 2023, the courts subservient to the junta have put (940) women in prison under specious charges. The Mandalay Region has the highest number of imprisoned women with (347). Among the (940) women, there are (23) women who have been sentenced to serve additional long prison sentences, (29) women sentenced to life imprisonment and (15) women sentenced to death.

On June 27, the junta sentenced an executive member of Dagon University Students’ Union Wutyi Aung to serve an additional 4 years in prison under Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. She was sentenced to serve 3 years in prison under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code on March 10, 2022, making her total sentence 7 years in prison. Junta forces arrested Wutyi Aung and 6 other students from Dagon University at Kyauktada Township, Yangon Region, on September 14, 2021.
