Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,701) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,598) people were arrested and among them, (19,252) are currently under detention, (6,561) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of June 26, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,346) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, in recent weeks, the junta has been increasingly carrying out airstrikes on non-military legitimate targets including civilian areas, across the country. As a result, civilians have been killed and injured. On June 23, at around 4 am, junta forces dropped bombs from an aircraft on Lu Hku Pa Ra and Do Raw Villages in the western Hpruso Township, Kayah State, without any clash taking place. As a result, a local named Lwee Zi from Do Raw Village was killed and two others were injured.

Additionally, junta forces have been increasingly executing arson attacks on civilian areas. On June 24, junta forces set fire to Shwe Inn Lay and Thein Taw Villages in Nyaung Pin Gyi Village Tract in Salingyi Township, Sagaing Region, without any clash taking place. 

According to the data collected by AAPP, from February 2021, to June 26, 2023, (108) people died in Kayah State at the hands of the junta. (68) people from February to December in 2021, (33) people in 2022 and (7) people from January to June 26 were killed. Among the (108), (29) people were killed by artillery shells while the number of people killed in detainment has risen to (46) people.
