Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,620) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (23,228) people were arrested and among them, (18,901) are currently under detention, (6,257) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (115) post-coup death row prisoners as of June 5, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (157) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,327) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly. 

According to monitoring by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, in recent weeks, the junta forces have carried out more airstrikes on non-military targets, including schools. On May 31, at around 11 am, a Mi-35 helicopter from the junta’s Northwestern Regional Command Headquarters, attacked a school in Pauk Inn Myaing Village, Kani Township in Sagaing Region, despite no clashes occurring in the area. They also destroyed a school and a house, and injured 2 children. 

Moreover, junta forces have been firing artillery shells at civilian areas, unprovoked. On June 1, at around 7 am, LIB-556 of the junta forces based in Za Wea Village, fired artillery shells at Lel Thit Village, Tanintharyi Township in Tanintharyi Region, despite no clashes occurring there. As a result, a local was injured by artillery shrapnel, and 2 houses were destroyed. In addition, over 2,000 locals had to flee for safety. 

According to information gathered today, on June 3 at 11 am, over 100 junta personnel raided and set fire to Na Bae Pin Hla Village in Wetlet Township, Sagaing Region. During the process, they captured a local named Hla Soe Aung and decapitated him. They then set his body on fire. 

In addition to this, on June 2 at around 8 am, over 60 junta personnel and their lackey Pyu Saw Htee militiamen raided Khin Yan Village in Gangaw Township, Magway Region. They shot and killed a local named Nyo Htay.
