Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,567) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (22,683) people were arrested and among them, (18,364) are currently under detention, (6,076) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (114) post-coup death row prisoners as of May 24, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (156) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,319) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly. 

According to information gathered today, on the morning of May 18, junta forces fired heavy weaponry at villages in Kyaukkyi Township, Bago Region. An artillery shell explosion in Kyun Taw Village resulted in the death of 14-year old Min Ye Hset, who was hit by artillery shrapnel. Two other locals were also injured by the artillery shrapnel.  

In addition to this, on the evening of May 18, a clash took place between around 70 junta personnel from No.415 Light Infantry Battalion and the PDF, between Min Lel and Ka Dat Chaung Villages in Katha Township, Sagaing Region. Then, on the morning of May 19, junta forces went to Min Lel Village and shot indiscriminately at locals. As a result, Nyo Nyo and Aye Aye Aung were both shot in the chest and died instantly, while three other locals were seriously injured.
