Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,520) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

It is verified that five detainees in prisons have been sentenced to death on May 18, 2023. One of them was each sentenced to death twice and the other four were each sentenced to death along with life imprisonment. Since the coup, a total of (22,481) people were arrested and among them, (18,169) are currently under detention, (5,976) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (117) post-coup death row prisoners as of May 18, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (159) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,312) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on May 17, at around 4:20 a.m., junta forces carried out aerial bombings with a fighter jet at Saw Lone Village, Bawlake Township, Kayah State, without any clashes taking place. As a result, 17-year-old Khin Shwe Win was killed, while her father and three other locals were injured. 

In addition to this, on the morning of May 17, a military column of over 200 junta personnel from Division 33 captured around 40 locals from Nant Yar and Khin Taung Villages, in Hpakant Township, Kachin State. The locals were used as human shields. There were children, pregnant women and elderly people among them and their current location is unknown.
