Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,490) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (22,018) people were arrested and among them (17,786) are currently under detention, (5,807) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (112) post-coup death row prisoners as of May 10, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (154) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,232) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on the morning of May 8, a military column with around 50 junta personnel raided Wae Rit Village, Thayetchaung Township in Tanintharyi Region. The junta troops captured locals Myo Myint Lay and Kam Kam. On the morning of May 9, the military column proceeded to raid Ya Nge Village again and captured another 6 locals. The 8 arrested persons have reportedly been beaten, tortured and interrogated by the junta forces at Ka Myaing Village in Thayetchaung Township.

In addition to this, on May 7, at around 1pm., junta forces arrested a man who was working at an auto-workshop in Lel Pyin Village, Long Hkin Village Tract, Hpakant Township in Kachin State. He was detained for alleged connections with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and PDF.
