Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,486) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (21,990) people were arrested and among them (17,766) are currently under detention, (5,811) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (112) post-coup death row prisoners as of May 9, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (154) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,224) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on the morning of May 8, around 50 junta personnel attacked Wet Chaung and Kha Maung Chaung Villages in Pu Gaw Zun Village Tract, Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region. The junta forces captured 20 locals from Wet Chaung Village and 10 locals from Kha Maung Chaung Village, then kept them at a school in Kha Maung Chaung Village.

In addition to this, on May 8, an alliance of junta troops and Pyu Saw Htee militiamen, around 30 personnel in total, captured Tun Tun Linn, a local of Lel Taw Village who lived in Pa Yit Kone (South) Village, Monywa Township in Sagaing Region, for no apparent reason. They were interrogating him after taking him to a primary school in Pa Yit Kone Village. He was tortured and killed during the interrogation. His body was discovered in front of the school.
