Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,476) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.
Since the coup, a total of (21,973) people were arrested and among them (17,750) are currently under detention, (5,804) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (112) post-coup death row prisoners as of May 8, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (154) people who have been sentenced to death. (4,223) people have already been released.
These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.
According to the data collected by the Documentation and Research Department of AAPP, in recent weeks, junta forces have been attacking non-military targets such as civilian locations and religious buildings. On May 2, junta forces carried out an aerial bombing using an aircraft at Malsawm and Vantalan Villages in Hakha Township, Chin State. As a result, a Baptist Church in Malsawm Village and 15 houses in Vantalan Village were destroyed. On May 5, junta forces again aerial bombed Malsawm Village.
Junta forces have been indiscriminately firing heavy weaponry at civilian villages, on May 6, junta forces from Ahlone Taung Military Base fired heavy weaponry at Ah Lu Village Tract, Bilin Township, Mon State. The artillery shells exploded in Ah Lu Ah Lel Village; two houses were destroyed and two locals from Ah Lu Ah Nauk Village were seriously injured by the shrapnel.
According to information gathered today, on the morning of May 7, around 50 junta forces from Light Infantry Battalion-361 attacked Htauk Shar Ai Village, Kanbalu Township in Sagaing Region, and set it on fire. Additionally, they also abducted around 15 locals, who ran into the junta personnel during the event.
In addition to this, on May 4, at 2 p.m., junta forces used 3 jet fighter planes to bomb Pait Khayar Village, Mingin Township in Sagaing Region. A bomb shell exploded; killing 7 locals including 3 children and injuring another 7 locals. The deceased were Myint Win, Than Swe, Ohn Sein, Mar Mar Aye, Zarni Linn Khet, May Su Naing and Ei Ei Soe.
