Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,444) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (21,566) people were arrested and among them (17,660) are currently under detention, (5,689) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (110) post-coup death row prisoners as of April 27, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (152) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,906) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on April 25, the junta sentenced Htet Paing (aka Maung Tar), Htay Hlaing, Zaw Myo Htet (aka Par Htaw), and Tite Nyunt to each serve five years in prison with hard labor under Counter-Terrorism Law Section 52(a) for allegedly having connections with members of the People’s Defence Force. Htet Paing, Htay Hlaing, and Zaw Myo Htet are from Inn Lel Gyi Village, and Tite Nyunt is from Tha Byay Thar Lay Village in Kanbalu Township, Sagaing Region.

In addition, on April 25, 100 junta personnel were attacking Shwe Hlay Village in Salingyi Township, Sagaing Region. On that day around 9 a.m., two locals were driving a motorbike along Nyaung Pin Gyi – Salingyi Road when they ran into the junta forces on Shwe Hlay Village Bridge. The junta forces shot at them, hitting motorbike driver Win Naung and causing him to fall off his bike. Then, the junta killed Win Naung by stabbing him in the stomach with a knife. The motorbike passenger riding with Win Naung managed to escape.
