Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,440) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (21,551) people were arrested and among them (17,645) are currently under detention, (5,677) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (110) post-coup death row prisoners as of April 26, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (152) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,906) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on the morning of April 24, a clash broke out between local defense forces and Pyu Saw Htee militiamen in Pin Taung Village, which is near Zee Taw Village, in Pauk Township, Magway Region. At 2 p.m. that day, the Pyu Saw Htee militiamen raided the village; burned Kyaw Lwin, who had a mental illness, alive; and set around 150 houses on fire.

In addition, on the morning of April 22, junta forces stationed in the municipal office of Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region, were attacked by a bomb. Afterwards, junta forces beat and arrested 16 locals, including three women and some boys under age 18, for allegedly being members and supporters of the People’s Defence Force. AAPP is trying to verify the identities of arrested persons.
