Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,422) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (21,467) people were arrested and among them (17,563) are currently under detention, (5,642) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (110) post-coup death row prisoners as of April 20, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (152) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,882) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on April 12, at around 1:30 a.m., the junta’s No. 28 Police Battalion fired an artillery shell from the side of Pathein-Monywa Road in Yinmarbin Township, Sagaing Region. The artillery shell exploded on a house in Shwe Pay Kone Village in Yinmarbin Township, killing 13-year-old Thuzar Tun and seriously injuring a woman.

In addition, on April 9, junta forces raided Si Thar Village in Shwegu Township, Kachin State, and arrested 10 locals, including a man named Soe Kyaw, who has a mental illness. Then they killed nine of them and left the village. Afterwards, the bodies of the nine were discovered. The deceased are Mya Aye, Than Cho, Htwe, Aung Myo Khaing, Maung Naing, Sein Win, Myat Nyein, Khin Nwe Oo, and Soe Moe. The whereabouts of Soe Kyaw are still unknown.
