Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,408) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (21,403) people were arrested and among them (17,499) are currently under detention, (5,601) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (109) post-coup death row prisoners as of April 18, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (151) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,882) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to the data collected by the Research and Documentation Department of AAPP, the junta has been carrying out more aerial attacks on civilians in recent weeks. On April 11, junta forces from the Northwest Command Headquarters attacked Pa Zi Gyi Village in Kanbalu Township, Sagaing Region, using a YAK-130 fighter plane and an MI-35 helicopter. The attack killed pro-democracy activists and civilians. In addition, on the first day of the Myanmar New Year, the junta announced the release of 3,113 prisoners under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Among those released, only three were political prisoners.

According to information gathered today, on April 16, junta forces arrested four members of the Revolutionary Thingyan Strike who were protesting the military dictatorship on Bogyoke Road in Tat U Thi Dar Ward, Kale Town, Sagaing Region. The four strike members are Than Soe Oo, Kyin Date Kin, Hnin San, and Myo Ko Win.
