Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,160) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (16,978) people are currently under detention, (5,206) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (108) post-coup death row prisoners as of March 24, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (150) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,844) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on March 22, Kaung Set Paing was sentenced to life imprisonment by the North Okkalapa Township military tribunal under Section 505 A of the Penal Code and Section 50(j) of the Counter-Terrorism Law. Kaung Set Paing is a member of North Okkalapa Township Students’ Union (All Burma Federation of Student Unions) responsible for activity coordination. He was detained by the junta on December 1, 2022.

In addition, on March 23, at around 8 a.m., around 60 junta forces and Pyu Saw Htee militiamen raided Mya Kan Village in Khin-U Township, Sagaing Region and set fire to the village. They detained and killed 65-year-old Nyo Tin after torturing him. His body was discovered in front of his house after the junta forces left around 10 a.m. that day.
