Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,158) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns against the pro-democracy movement.

Since the coup, a total of (16,954) people are currently under detention, (5,189) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (108) post-coup death row prisoners as of March 23, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (150) people who have been sentenced to death. (3,844) people have already been released. 

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on March 20, Khin Than Nu (aka Nilar), the wife of NLD Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of Khin-U Township, Sagaing Region, Dr. Win Aung, and her daughter Ei Nandar Aung were each sentenced to three years in prison with hard labor. They were sentenced by the Khin-U Township military tribunal under Section 505 A(c) of the Penal Code. On February 24, Khin Than Nu and Ei Nandar Aung were detained by a large group of junta personnel near Gandawin Tauk Gyi Tea Shop in Khin-U Town.

In addition, on March 21, junta forces raided and set fire to Aout Kyauk Wut Village in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region; burning to ash around 40 houses. Junta troops also shot Kham Mae in the head dead. His body was discovered when the junta forces had left the village in the evening.
