Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,137) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (16,519) people are currently under detention, (5,087) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of March 16, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (145) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,842) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on March 15, at 6 a.m., junta forces raided and set fire to Hta Naung Taw (South) Village in Monywa Township, Sagaing Region, without any clashes taking place. As a result, three locals, who were around 70 years old and could not flee, were burned alive. Their names were Htain Linn, Htay Maung, and Gwan. After the junta forces left the village, the three locals’ bodies were discovered.

In addition, on March 10, at around 6 a.m., around 50 junta soldiers attacked Thae Inn Village in Singu Township, Mandalay Region. On March 12, the junta soldiers arrested a People’s Defense Force member named Phoe Thae and two locals. They tortured Phoe Thae and then burned him alive along with the two locals. On the evening of March 15, their bodies were discovered in the village.
