Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021, military coup and the emergence of the Spring Revolution, a total of (3,124) people, including pro-democracy activists and other civilians, have been killed through military crackdowns following pro-democracy movements.

Since the coup, a total of (16,494) people are currently under detention, (5,064) of whom are serving sentences. There are a total of (103) post-coup death row prisoners as of March 14, 2023. (121) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (42) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (145) people who have been sentenced to death. (24) people have been released on bail, and (3,841) people have already been released. These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to information gathered today, on March 13, at around 1 a.m., around 20 junta personnel raided Myo Thant Barbershop in Maw Wam Ward, Hpakant Township, Kachin State. The junta arrested seven locals, including the barbershop owner, Myo Thant. The other six who were arrested are Phoe Chan, Hpu Lam Khaing, Chit Khaing, Kyaw Myint, Naung Naung (aka Phyo Kyaw), and Aung Zay Ya. It is not known where they are currently being detained.

In addition, on March 12, at 6:30 a.m., Pyu Saw Htee member Lar Lar’s home in Zar Di Village, Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region was shot at. Then, junta soldiers from Mawrawady Naval Base came to the village. The junta conducted searches and then arrested three locals. One of them was former political prisoner and former medical officer Aung Min. The other two were Aung Mae and Aung Kyaw. In 2021, Aung Min had been sentenced to serve two years in Dawei Prison under Section 505A of the Penal Code for protesting the military coup. He was released in October 2022.
